Creating Maps on ArcGIS Online Using X,Y Coordinates

The following instructions can be used to create a map on ArcGIS Online using X, Y coordinates:

1.   Go to www.arcgis.com
2.   Sign in
3.   Click Map
4.   Convert all desired coordinates from Degrees, Minutes, Seconds to Decimal Degrees
          a) Online converters can be used such as:
               http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html 
5.   Open a new excel document
          a) In Column A, Row 1, type Latitude
          b) In Column B, Row 1, type Longitude
          c) In the appropriate columns, fill in with the converted coordinates
6.   Click File in the upper left hand corner of the screen
          a) Select Save As 
          b) Type in desired File name under the 'File name:' box
          c) For the 'Save as Type' choose CSV (Comma delimited) (*.cvs)
7.   Click Add in the upper left hand corner of the screen
          a) Select 'Add layer from file'
          b) Click 'Choose File'
          c) Locate and open the excel file saved in the previous step
          d) Select 'Import Layer'
8.   To edit the symbol, click on the arrow next to the name of the file on the left hand side of the page
          a) Select 'Change Symbols'
          b) Click 'Options'
          c) Select 'Change Symbols'
          d) Edit the symbol and size as preferred
          e) Click 'Done'
9.   In the upper right hand corner of the page, click Save As
          a) Create a title for the map and type it in the 'Title' box
          b) Create Tags in the 'Tag' box to be able to easily access it once published
          c) If desired, write a brief summary about the map
          d) Click 'Save Map'
10.   In the upper right hand corner of the page, click Share
          a) Check the box 'Everyone (public)'
          b) Copy the 'Link to this map' link in order to have easy access back to the map

In order to complete this assignment, I had to first convert all of the conversions from Degrees, Minutes, Seconds to Decimal Degrees using an online converter. I then inserted all of the coordinates into a blank excel sheet and saved it as a CSV file. Once all the coordinates were typed and saved, I was able to upload them onto a map on ArcGIS Online. The locations were automatically recorded onto the map using a point symbol for each coordinate. After completing all components of the map for this assignment, the map was saved and shared to the public. The finished map can be viewed below.
